Dental emergencies are a fact of life. Many people know the basics of First Aid for most other problems, and there are plenty of courses available for those who may not know those basics. But what about dental emergencies? There are things you can do when a dental emergency strikes, and taking a few minutes now to learn what to do could help you save a tooth.

As soon as possible you should contact Dr. David Cho at Alpha Dental Spa. In many cases, the sooner that you see the dentist, the better the results of your treatment will be.

If you lose a tooth because of a trauma, you should rinse it in cool water. Do not handle the tooth by the roots, but try to put it back in the socket. If you are able to do so, gently bite down on the tooth through a clean piece of gauze to hold it in place. If the tooth will not go back in the socket, place it in a container or milk, a tooth-preserving solution, or hold it between your cheek and gums. Time is of the essence and ideally, you should see the dentist within 30 minutes to save the tooth, although you may have a window of about two hours.

If you crack a tooth, you should see the dentist as soon as you can. If you feel pain or sensitivity, when biting down or eating, even if the pain is brief and not even very intense, you may have a cracked tooth. The dentist may need to perform a root canal or place a crown on your tooth.

For a toothache, use dental floss to remove any foreign particles or food debris from the area. Rinse with warm water, and use an over the counter pain reliever if needed.

A lost filling can be temporarily replaced with cotton pellets, temporary fillings or dental cement. A loose crown can be held in place with dental cement until you can see the dentist.

If you have a chipped tooth and there is no pain and the damage is not visible, you should still call the dentist for an appointment so that you he can advise you on the best course of treatment.
