Wintertime can be a difficult for maintaining a healthy smile. The holiday food, the busy schedule, and unfortunately, the illness that so often accompanies this time of year can all contribute to deteriorating oral health. Here are some things you can do to take care of your teeth and gums during this holiday season.
First, make sure you are brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and short, tooth-wide strokes. This is incredibly important as the holiday season continues. No one wants a cavity frustrating their holiday plans! Also, remember to floss every day for 2-3 minutes.
Holiday food brings its own dilemma. Many winter foods and drinks are full of acid, sugar, or both. There are the obvious culprits, like candy, cookies, and hot chocolate. There are also less obvious offenders: wine and alcoholic drinks, tea with sugar and lemon, sports drinks, and cough drops, for example. Be sure to limit these, or choose sugar-free options, if available. Accompany all acidic drinks and foods with a tall glass of plain water.
Lastly, be sure to replace your toothbrush frequently. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months, and the holidays are a great time! Treat yourself to a brush in your favorite color, or that electric toothbrush you have been wanting for a while now.
